Building honest systems
and communities worth showing up to

I'm Chris Baldwin — a generalist, systems thinker, and builder in Minneapolis.

Senior Reliability Engineer · SPS Commerce Co-founder · Baldwin MN LLC

Current Projects

Each one started from a problem that bothered me enough to build toward the answer.

OpenGander
Beta
Consent-first web analytics

Web analytics built on consent as a first principle, not an afterthought. First-party data collection, transparent instrumentation, full data ownership.

OpenTelemetry ClickHouse MCP
Masques
Experimental
AssumeRole for agents

What if agents could adopt cognitive identities the way containers assume IAM roles? Masques bundles Intent, Context, Knowledge, Access, and Lens into composable identity primitives.

LLMinal
Experimental
The 402 Dungeon

A text-based MUD for AI agents. Agents pay to descend via HTTP 402. Masque identity, TigerBeetle ledger, Solana settlement, OTel observability.

BlueAbs Urien Lab
Beta
Tutorial mode for Urien

A training lab for Urien in 3rd Strike — a notoriously execution-heavy character who demands real time in the lab. Built to lower the barrier for players willing to put in the work.

Previous work

Shipped, learned from, moved on.

FC Rank
Fightcade player search

A search tool indexing 35,000+ players across the Fightcade platform. Built to help community members find their place on the leaderboard.

TruthByte
Crowdsourcing evaluation

A Zig+Wasm web application for crowdsourcing LLM evaluation in true-or-false format.

How I Think About Things

Honest systems produce harmonious communities.

Truth at the Source

Don't trust a summary when you can instrument the system. Observability is a posture, not a feature. If the data has passed through three hands before it reaches you, you're reading fiction.

Leverage with Comprehension

Tools must be used properly to be understood. They expand capability and reveal new possibilities. Learning is difficult — be patient with yourself and others.

Incentives Shape Behavior

The best systems make the right thing the easy thing. All incentives are perverse in the limit — the play is to create rules that nudge toward good outcomes anyway.

Commitment over Optionality

Optionality is comfortable. Commitment ships. It frees you from the tyranny of ambiguity, clarifies goals, and gives direction. Feeling ready means you've already waited too long.

Face the Reality

Not what you wish were true. Not what you think would be fair. Look at the situation clearly, accept it, decide on the next step. Judge the process, not the outcome.

Distillation Is Undervalued

Finding a better way to present, compress, or teach existing knowledge — that's real work. Most problems are isomorphic to one you've already solved. The skill is seeing the structure underneath.

Support Your Local Arcade

Build for communities, not audiences. Ship what people actually need. Show up. Play. Win or lose — we learn, teach, and compete. Stewardship in a local community yields long-term returns: friends, mentors, purpose.

Want to build something?

I'm having a great time and there's room for more. Whether you want to join a project, start something new, or argue about context windows — let's go.
